Roimatawe is pronounced "Roy-matah-way", which derives from a story in the Māori mythology, a love story with a twist.
It is a story of a beautiful young girl named Hine, who met and fell in love with a Māori warrior named Tawe. One day while walking the dangerous paths of Mt Aorangi, the gods of the mountain struct Tawe with an avalanche and resulted in his death. Hine could not handle the death of her first and true love. As she lay there, her tears flows down the mountain, forming the glacial mountain which we now call Franz Josef Glacier.
